One of my favorite cruise itineraries has been along the Adriatic, port-hopping through Croatia, Montenegro and Slovenia. A number of luxury cruise lines offer itineraries in this region, including Silversea, Seabourn and Crystal Cruises. The scenery is breathtaking throughout the region, with architecture that reflects diverse cultures in the stately buildings and picturesque coastal cities.

One of the most scenic segments of this coast is Kotor Bay, which twists through fjord-like mountains dotted with tiny dome-topped churches and Montenegro, whose city walls encircle the town extending up to a church, with a high fort built into the mountains. 

Dubrovnik, Croatia is another gem on this route. Its pedestrian-only medieval center is encircled by a giant wall with a guard’s walk that is now a favorite spot for visitors to take in incredible views of the Adriatic as well as the city. Game of Thrones fans may enjoy taking a tour to explore many of the filming sites. 

Koper, Slovenia is a delight. I always suggest my clients take the time to explore its Old Town and stop into some of my favorite shops and eateries to sample the local wines and enjoy the wonderful melding of Italian and Mediterranean cuisine and culture. And like most of the ports of call, you’ll never be far from a lovely beach.
