Ski Travel Experts Share Insider Tips

By Polina Price and Robin Prastien

When it comes to a passion like skiing, you need a compatriot of the slopes to truly understand what counts as good, quality skiing. Anyone can point you towards a mountain with snow, but it takes an insider to know who has the year’s freshest powder; where to find the best bunny slopes or double black diamonds; how to navigate the intricacies of prearranged lift tickets, equipment, transportation and accommodations.

Queue Protravel luxury ski destination experts Robin Prastien and Polina Price. Both offer lifetimes worth of skiing expertise. We’ve pooled their insights into hitting the slopes around the world.

Vail and Aspen rank high for United States ski locales, but there are also great ski opportunities everywhere from New England and New York, to Park City, Utah. In Canada, Mont Tremblant has been getting better air connections, which makes it a great option from the East Coast, and on the Pacific side, you can fly into Vancouver and combine a city stay with world-class skiing at Whistler Blackcomb Ski Resort, a major venue for the 2010 Winter Olympics."- Polina Price

However, from the East Coast, many European ski resorts are comparable in travel time and cost to getting to the Rockies. Even in Courchevel, France known for its A-list celebrity clientele, we can usually find you a hotel room for $150 a night. Not only that, but Europeans generally travel with their children from a very young age, so almost all of their ski resorts are very family friendly. For young children, you can find quality childcare and ski schools for all skill levels.

Plus, you have the added allure of experiencing another culture. Often, the lifts are more comfortable than in the U.S., and even the slope-side cafeteria food is great. And, as in some of the U.S. ski resorts, there is the option of skiing from town to town in many areas. “- Polina Price

“Many skiers are interested in doing more than hitting the slopes. For some, a ski getaway is equally about the nightlife and local ambiance. Knowing what you like to do off-slope is also a big consideration in choosing your destination." - Robin Prastien

Sometimes our client’s wish lists are quite specific. For example, one client is so strictly kosher that he travels with his own pots and pans. He is flying his brothers into the U.S. from Israel for a ski trip. I first suggested Salt Lake City because they would only have one change of flight, but they chose Aspen because there is a kosher cannabis edibles store there!

Ultimately, Christmas is the most popular time to book a ski getaway, and a lot of people head to Colorado. Large rental houses in Aspen for an extended family gathering with kids, nannies and three generations of family members is a great option. One family’s grandparents shipped presents for everyone to the house, and we surprised them with a decorated Christmas tree so they could celebrate together. It was super-fun to arrange and everyone had a family holiday to remember.
