Clear your mind, cleanse your body and heal your soul this winter season

Wellness is not just about walking 10,000 steps a day or being physically fit. There are important spiritual and emotional components that go into feeling your best. I discovered this about 15 years ago when I started practicing yoga. I have always lead an active lifestyle but from my first yoga class, I could already feel its restorative value. Yoga classes make me feel more centered and grounded.

I have been a professional Travel Agent for many years but began to change how I thought about travel for myself and my clients decided to become a certified wellness travel specialist. The more I learn about new destinations, the more I can incorporate wellness into every type of itinerary. In every destination, I look for wonderful hikes, yoga, Pilates, and other activities that take my clients outside into nature or deeper into a new culture. That might mean swimming at the gorgeous and varied secluded beaches of Anguilla, Turks & Caicos or Barbados or hiking through the Torres del Paine National Park in Chile.

For those who are seeking a true reboot, there are some spectacular destination spas. If you’re focused on healthy living, diet and fitness, de-stressing and detoxing, Canyon Ranch in Tucson, Arizona or Lenox, Massachusetts are a great choice. They have great exercise classes, and healthy eating is a major part of their program. There are also excellent wellness resorts and spas across Europe, many of which I have experienced personally and am happy to recommend and book you with exclusive VIP benefits, such as complimentary breakfast, upgrades and spa credits.

MIRAVAL RESORT

Miraval, with locations in Tucson, Arizona and Austin, Texas is a very different type of luxury destination spa. It is very much about healing and spirituality and is my go-to property when a client needs to come to terms with something traumatic or set in motion major life changes. I recently sent two female clients there who were asking to go somewhere to heal after a difficult year, and I knew it would be perfect for them.

During my visit to Miraval, I did yoga, attended a variety of organized classes, took hikes in the desert, saw beautiful sunsets and stars, and spent time with a healer. I especially responded to their equine experience where I learned more about myself than the horse. Overall, it was an enriching experience, and one I know my clients would enjoy.

Wellness is my passion, and whether you’re looking for a place to go to heal, reset your habits or simply incorporate wellness and fitness into your travels, I can help craft the ideal getaway for you.

As a Pilates instructor and a yoga practitioner, I am a huge fan of wellness travel, from luxury spas and yoga retreats to fitness-focused getaways.

Couple practicing yoga

Many people find spas and wellness retreats a meaningful focus for a friendship reunion or a couples’ reconnection getaway, while others prefer to go on their own, so they can accomplish a specific goal. In fact, I have seen wellness-focused vacations help clients shed bad habits and kick-start beneficial new ones. Meditation, yoga, and Pilates are among the mindfulness tools that often help travelers reconnect with themselves and what is meaningful to them.

When a client tells me that they want to take a wellness trip or go to a spa, my first question to them is: “what is the reason behind your request and what do you most want to achieve from this journey?” The experiences I will recommend will be very different for someone seeking to reconnect with or reinvent themselves versus wanting to be completely pampered and come back relaxed and rejuvenated. Wellness retreats can be a kind of pilgrimage to health and wellbeing, where you can clear your mind, cleanse your body and set yourself up to return home having internalized some new healthy routines.

I am now in the midst of planning a yoga retreat for a group of 15, including myself, at the Hotel Boulderado, a beautiful Victorian landmark in Boulder, Colorado at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. It will be led by my incredible and charismatic yoga instructor. I’ll also provide Pilates classes for those interested. Weather-permitting, we will hold morning and afternoon practices outdoors, along with a number of adventures in nature, including class 2 whitewater rafting and guided hikes. We will also leave plenty of free time for shopping, spa treatments and relaxing.

Wellness seekers will also find everything they need at Rancho La Puerto. They have great instructors offering all kinds of classes, including yoga, meditation and meal preparation. There is also private coaching in lifestyle and exercise, as well as spa treatments and they tailor the experience to each guest’s needs. Canyon Ranch also offers great wellness programming.

Young couple relaxing in a spa

For those who want to de-stress but are not looking to make wellness the focus of their stay, I can suggest other amazing spas in the United States and around the world. Some of my personal favorites are in California and Costa Rica, where you have diverse options for enjoying nature and resetting your brain and body.

Call me if you are looking to design a cohesive, wellness mind/body experience that you can bring savor and then bring home to make your world a better place for yourself and the people in life that matter to you.
